How to Care for Refinished Hardwood Floors

How to Care for Refinished Hardwood FloorsHardwood floors are beautiful, increase the value of your home, and lend a sense of sophistication to your space. A proper maintenance routine extends the life of your flooring. However, when regular cleaning and waxing no longer removes all the dents and stains that accumulate over time, a refinishing will restore wood floors to like-new condition. Freshly refinished floors need special care. Use these tips to keep your refinished hardwood floors free of dings, scratches, and smudges.

The Curing Process

After refinishing, the new coating on your hardwood floors can take up to a month to completely harden. Until then, floors may sustain damage from everyday activities. Here are some pointers on keeping your fresh coating smooth and scar-free.

  • Do not allow any activity on refinished floors for the first 12 hours after coating application. Open windows and use box fans to encourage  faster drying.
  • Avoid direct sunlight on newly coated floors for at least 24 hours.
  • Only allow walking with socks on floors for the first 3 days. Even athletic shoes can leave scuffs that mar your new floor’s appearance.
  • After a week, the finish should be hard enough to resume regular activities. Replace furniture in the room but leave the carpets and rugs put away for   few more weeks.
  • During the first month, skip the cleansers, mops, and motorized cleaning devices, as these things can compromise the integrity of the hardening finish. Use a broom or dust mop to sweep floors clean during this time. If needed, spot clean with a damp rag.

Four weeks after your refinishing job is complete, your floor should be fully cured and ready to stand up to the normal daily stresses of modern life.

Regular Maintenance

After your refinished hardwood floors are fully cured, use these tips to keep them clean and in good repair.

  • Dirt, oil, and other unpleasant substances slowly erode your finish. Sweep and mop your floors frequently to keep them free of finish dissolving soot. Clean up spills and messes immediately.
  • Place protective felt pads or old socks under furniture to reduce pressure damage and prevent scuffing. Instead of dragging furniture during rearrangements, lift them to avoid damaging hardwood floors.
Choose chairs with polyurethane wheels. Traditional nylon casters have tiny jagged edges that can pit and scratch wooden flooring.
  • Use mats or area rugs near doorways and entry points to collect traveling debris like fiber from carpets.
  • Avoid oil-based or waxy cleaners on polyurethane flooring. Water or acrylic-based cleansers work best for these finishes.

After refinishing, a regular routine will keep your hardwood floors looking great for many years. These tips are a great way to protect your investment and enjoy the natural warmth of your wood floors over the lifetime of your home.
